MARKET PULSE: Hiring Trends
In February Informed Infrastructure hosted a webinar on the State of the Engineering Economy presented by Joseph Bates, Senior Research Consultant at the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Research Institute.
Below is a summary of key findings related to engineering employment. For comprehensive information consult the resources available at the ACEC Research Institute (Resource Library - ACEC, The Engineering Influence Podcast).
National trends
↔ Consistent with last year, 90% of firms have at least one position to fill.
↔ For firms with 25 or fewer employees the median number of open positions is steady at ~12% of employees over the past year.
↔ For firms with 26 or more employees the median number of open positions is steady at around 6% of employees. These are down slightly from 7 - 10% of employees a year ago.
Regional Trends
↔ Job opportunities remain robust with the Northeast and Midwest having the highest median number of openings (12 and 7 respectively) with the South and West fewer average openings (5 and 2 openings respectively). Nearly all regions see a slight reduction in median openings over the previous quarter.
